I've very much enjoyed this "monster", but am left with perplexity (to quote one of the answers!) on 6 Down, which is:-
"As subversive on pier had, seaside picture". It's 12 letters long, and as
I have every alternative letter, the answer can only be QUADRIPLEGIA or QUADRIPLEGIC, but I can't relate either word to the clue. Any help?

QUADROPHENIA
Defn. is ‘seaside picture’ as in the 70’s film based in Brighton.
QUA (as) + (on pier had)*

I also couldn't get 6d (still not sure where the subversive comes into it).

1d Churchgoing liberal missing company initially (5)
P?O?S, so pious maybe?

20d Unusual instrument just spinning in gossamer (7)

47a As, for example, planes run well during first minutes of flight? (11)
A?B?R?S???T

Subversive is an anagram indicator for what follows.

Liberal is Copious, minus the abbrev for company

R + bore (well) in ascent, for arborescent

20d is theremin (an unusual instrument which seems to crop every now and again in crosswords). Mere (just) reversed in thin (gossamer)
