The answer is penicillin but I can’t parse it - can anyone help? Thanks.

Put down = PEN, evil = ILL inside ICIN(G), US word for killing

Looks like PEN (put down) ILL (evil) in ICIN(g), American slang term for killing (a lot of meaning not quite all)

Of course Alexander Fleming discovered it

8 Down "Start game when golf is banned" (5) R-U-- Is it "round"?
13 Across "Song was missing verse" (4) not got a clue on this one!

7 Skilled, professional. Swap the T in Skillet, saving time, for D, days.
8 Rouse, syaty, Grouse = Game(bird), with the G, golf, dropped/banned.

13 Lied, German word for song, LIved = was, drop the V, verse.
