Hi all, well it seems a lot of regular contributors are enjoying some time at the beach, or other such pleasures, who can blame them!
I’m flattered that Mattrom and Jimmy chose to use my monicker as a part of their wordplay ā˜ŗļø. I also liked Matrrom’s ā€œdenudedā€ and the musical reference’s from Geeker ā€œAjaā€ and Jimmy ā€œRHCPā€ (see below).
For Chris’s clue I had to look up ā€œJapan aloeā€ to see if was a real thing, and edible, but sure enough it is! And I’m always happy when Aristo dips into his native tongue šŸ‡øšŸ‡Ŗ
Also liked Paul’s ā€œa plan Joeā€ anagram and BBM’s construction.

It was a difficult decision, but I’m going with Chris as I like the use of ā€œnot aā€ …

Cooked Japan aloe (not a hot one!) (8)

Many thanks, jono. I got lucky with the Japan aloe!

The clips reminded me of a couple of things. Just after we had finished being students, we stayed with a friend in the wilds of Suffolk. He had on his windowsill an ornamental plant with fruits on. I told him the fruits looked like chillies. He immediately ate one. After he recovered, he said "yes, they are!"
At university I had a slight acquaintance, Jeremy Cherfas, who got into science journalism, and this included fronting a Horizon programme once. I can't remember what it was about, but I remember that he took third place in a chilli eating competition in Texas - obviously trained through Cambridge curries!
I think there have been fatalities associated with Carolina Reaper chillies, unfortunately.

Well done, chris! Thanks to jono for a spicy challenge, clips and mention.
I visited Thailand a few times in the mid-late '70s (family moved there), and have vivid memories of various extremely hot chilis. 🄵 I've lost my tolerance for super-spicy food, however.
