It's not in Chambers or Collins or the Online Free Dictionary, so I'm at a loss as to how it can be a real word!

...the preamble tells us it's in ODE but not Chambers.

...and it is there, brendan - it can also be spelled with just 'y' on the end instead of the much more elaborate flourish we've got here.

Thanks to The Ace Of Hearts for two delightful puzzles this weekend. The fact they have the same unusual but original device makes me wonder if the editors of the big three British weekend puzzles ever compare notes before selecting for publication. I suspect not!

Just puzzled by my solution to 33 across. I have a suitable couturier, but Wiki has him as being of Russian origin and becoming a Hollywood designer.

I think he was born in France.
