The preamble suggests that we are to discover "a" keyword, so how do the three different 4-letter words that can follow each word in a triplet contribute to finding a single keyword (or is that the badly worded part)?

The title further suggests some relation to chemical elements, which I can't relate to the 3 words.

Hi buddy,
the keyword when added to each triplet can also precede the relevant 4-letter word.
The element suggested by the title when preceding the keyword is "topical" as per the preamble.

Aha, Not so topical here in the US. I suspect plenty of the weekend puzzles will be similarly themed.

Thanks

A smartly dressed cyclist might be wearing a ?I? C??? and a pair of ?O? C???s. Am I missing something?

Yes they both appear valid and the I/O is unchecked. Google gives 4,420,000 results for the former, and 1,290,000 for the latter. So I vote for wisdom of the crowd.
