I know the answer to this clue, based on letters that I have left, but I'd really like to understand how the answer connects to the clue, as it's really frustrating me! The clue is: Perhaps sixteen farmers left, showing contempt. The answer is SCORNFUL. I think the farmers part might be NFU, and L for left, but where could sixteen come into it? There's no other 16 in the crossword puzzle, so it doesn't refer to another clue. Any answers welcome!!

16 is 4/5 of 20 and 4/5 of SCORE is SCOR
