Buddy, my experience was somewhat similar. Though The War of the Worlds had been played and discussed in grade school (!), I mostly knew of OW through TV appearances and commercials ("sell no wine before its time" was widely mocked on the small screen iirc). Saw Citizen Kane in college (mid-'70s), was impressed, but became a serious fan only after seeing The Third Man circa 1983.

Aristo, strongly agreed on Nero Wolfe! The character seemed to have been written for the latter-day Welles, a perfect match.

Well done, Buddy, nice clue. Thanks for the silver, Geeker, and a fruitful word. Will look at the clips later - rain has stopped, so it's dog-walking time.

geeker: Do you remember the Widettes on SNL in the 70s? They were fans of Orson Welles and Beverly Sills. :)

@Aristo

Read my first (and the first) Nero Wolfe about six months or so ago. Different! The copy I have includes the second one, so will try that in the near future.

geeker: Rex Stout really was an excellent writer, and Archie Goodwin was a brilliant creation.

spike: The early ones were rather cartoonish compared to the late ones. A favorite of mine is The Doorbell Rang, from the 60s. Among the early ones Too Many Cooks is a gem.

I liked how seriously Welles took Andy Kaufman in the 3rd clip. Maybe he was just being nice to a guest, but I prefer to think of it as genius recognizing genius (of a very different sort).
