20a Honourable office-holder put a pound in front of us? It indicates corruption! (6)

?B?L?S

I have OBELUS but I don't see the connection with corruption. Can anyone help please?

Obelus: A mark [thus —, or ÷]; -- so called as resembling a needle. In old MSS. or editions of the classics, it marks suspected passages or readings.

Chambers gives: Obelus - a sign ( – or †) used in ancient manuscripts to mark suspected, corrupt or spurious words and passages

which makes it just a little clearer
