Jigjag, this was the letter in Monday's DT:

SIR – Marion Hansford’s letter (December 7) on teacakes not being served after 11am at Marks and Spencer reminded me of driving to Scotland from London some years ago.

After many hours at the wheel, the prospect of an all-day breakfast at a service station in the Borders was very tempting. “Sorry, sir,” was the depressing reply when I tried to order one, “we only serve the all-day breakfast up to 11 o’clock.”

It took very little ingenuity, however, to order the individual components and assemble them on one plate. Problem solved.

Thanks for posting the letter. I am glad the professor solved the problem as I did.

I called in at the market café this morning, hoping for the usual friendly greeting, but I was to be disappointed.
“I’m surprised at you showing your face, after winding me up the other day”, said Cassie. “I suppose you know Camp Coffee is syrup. A bloke called Simon told me about it yesterday.”
“Syrup?” I replied.
“A mixture of water and sucrose, formula C12 H22 O11” she said.
“I’m amazed at your knowledge, are you a chemist?”
“No, but I have worked in Boots. You pick up a lot of science there. Anyway, this syrup is flavoured with coffee and chickpea essence, Simon said.”
“I think you might have mis-heard” I advised her. I think I know what she means, but it seems an unlikely ingredient.

Jigjag, thanks for today's interesting and amusing - and informative, we got science throiwn in - anecdote. It is very good of you to keep us up to date on your progress in the world of coffee. I liked the earlier discussion on (not) all-day breakfasts.

Thanks, glad you liked it. I had my first coffee at age 18 and have had only a few since then. I am now making exciting discoveries and I realise what I have been missing all these years.
It was interesting that the Professor had the same experiece as I did, re so-called All-day breakfasts.

Jigjag - you’re right, of course, Cassie did mishear us when we described the ingredients- it was a bad line so she can be excused - chick peas might provide an alternative ersatz source to chicory - but tell her acorns were used originally. We heard she’s doing an OU science course to become upwardly mobile.

I called in at the market café this morning to ask Cassie a question, which I had forgotten to ask on recent visits.
“Are you by any chance related to the lovely Samantha from the Radio?”
“What programme is she on?” Cassie asked.
“I’m Sorry, I Haven’t a Clue”.
“Then what was the point of asking me, if you don’t know the answer yourself” she rebuked me.
“Apparently she specialises in double entendres” I added.
“Well I specialise in double egg on toast” she replied. “Anyway, she must be a fictional character, because a real woman would call herself Sammy or Sam.”
“Yes I think you’re right. I don’t know any Samanthas who don’t shorten their name.
It left me wondering what Cassie’s real name is.
