They did indeed chris. I wouldn't have liked to have had to choose.

I was given some "enrobed ginger" for Christmas. I think that's from the drizzle/foam school of cookery, though it was splendid.

I hardly ever need to enter a bank nowadays but today I saw several large notices in my local NatWest branch:

'Please practice social distancing'

I think higher up this thread we found that the spelling is correct in America but I do like the noun with a c / verb with an s distinction. Audible in advice/advise, prophecy/prophesy, device/devise, spellings which I assume are used by Americans, so it is inconsistent not to distinguish between licence/license, practice/practise etc.

I'm with you on that, paulh. It doen't inspire confidence in NatWest (which is my bank). Those posters would have had to go through a few stages with more than one person involved before they appeared in branches. Surely someone along the way would have spotted it.

Paul

I agree. But you are lucky to have a bank. My local branch closed a year ago and it is a 30 min trip each way to the nearest branch, and that is closing soon.

Nice clue including "pedants" in Times today.

Is there such a word as anti-vaxxxer? Or have the papers made it up? I have also seen it spelt with one or two x. I believe a tennis player called Jokeovic and Piers Morbyn are leaders in the field.

There's no word in Chambers with xx in it. The correct word apparently is antivaccinationist, which first appeared in 1883. But that's not snappy enough for newspapers, I suppose.

Candledave, I'd thought of starting a new 2022 thread, but worried I'd be interrupting some conversations, discussions, midstream!

Don’t worry Malone, I was only kidding really - just thought it was funny on the Pedants thread.

Happy New Year
