It certainly was a toughie. Once (with help) I stopped looking for the letter strings adding together to make a phrase it left a clear run at the other 5s. They fell eventually.
10a was my last to resolve.
The erroneous/corrected letters looked a bit odd at first but the penny dropped and Lady and Lord came together and Bob's your mother's brother.

Will relax with Azed tomorrow!

Thank you Ifor. Clever, complex puzzle. Particularly liked the way the letter strings and the quote related.

Good evening, I seem to be rather stuck not so much at the last as the penultimate hurdle.

Despite having the Lord, the quotation in the grid, the lady and how they and the quotation relate, I came to him via her and the, as it were, spitral item, without deciphering the misprints in the 5 letter answers, for the cryptic clue to him. I don't need it now, but I want it - so frustrating - I can't for the life of me work out the misprints in 10, 28 or 36A.

A couple are quite obscure. Rather than give them away, it should help to know that in 10 it’s the 3rd letter of a word, in 28 the 5th and in 36 the 2nd

Nansen, 10 is one that contains a string to be removed, 28 has the misprint in the last word and 36 has the misprint in the seventh word.

Sorry - 10 the misprint is in the fourth word. Confused it with 11 - too much beer.

10a is quite a sneaky clue, could be either of the two 5-letter alternatives, took me a while to work out which was the right one

I'm enjoying this and nearly done. Still can't see 36a Caesar one which granama was asking about yesterday? Any tips?
Also 33a, is it a proper noun?
