Yes, I have to agree that the herbicide (8 Down) appears to be one word only. Here's one I can't yet see:-
37 Down - "Taking Charlie to empty place for washing gear primarily"
It's 10 letters, and I have -R-E-A-ING. I imagine "C" comes into it somewhere.

I was quite surprised to see a clue like this in the Times but ...

Free + Basin + G - definition is "taking Charlie" - it's where you smoke cocaine that's been "washed" and had all the impurities taken out of it.
