Re that syllable, I considered “on” and “performing” and also using “top” and switching the synonym for the end of the 7 letter thematic answer.

I thought “on” had to come out of the “age” clue but not sure now.

I had “on” in the age clue as a link to “an” in the thematic item in the second column. Might be wrong though!

Unclued - I had “one” in the quilting party clue for that.

I did quite enjoy this game within a game despite the slight ambiguity to it.

Good, solid, fairly straight forward puzzle as we expect from Malva. Got tripped up for a while with the B/D - unusual to have 2 answers that fit the definition that are both in the right place alphabetically.

Grid filled with the 8 identified and 7.5 of them associated with extra words. I think there's an extra in 'Sort cut grain.....' but can't make it fit in any satisfying way. It seems too intense to mean p**p.

Extra word is "root" as 'encourage' which is the last 4 letters of the thematic in row 3 - I think!

Hi Brendan. Oh. I may be in a pickle here, I thought that was 'pink' as in prod with a sharp thing but now I see, looking deeper in Chambers, that it also means 'p**p'. So, all resolved inc. the 9th (which I wasn't going to bother with until I realised the circles aren't random).
