Just checking that I've put the correct answer for one clue, and that's 12 Across, which reads:- Very quietly coming up with advantage, initially telling." I have put APPEASING in, which would virtually mean that "telling" in the clue would equal "easing" in my answer. It didn't seem like quite the right synonym, bearing in mind that APPEARING and APPEASING also fit in the grid.

Silly me! I put "A" where the first "I" should be in SILMARILLION. and ended up with THE SALMARILLION, which no-one's ever heard of!

I cannot see any indication in the clue that the A is at the start of the answer. Following the logic of the clue the answer should be PPRISINGA.

I tend to agree, parallelogram. For the clue to work , either 1) "advantage" must be synonymous with "a", or 2) "initially" must do double duty to indicate both the first letter and where it must appear in the answer, or 3) "with" must be used in the sense that "a with b" could mean either "ab" or "ba". I don't know which is intended, possibly the last, but none seems ideal

Your B is wrong. The 'conference' isn't a get-together....The definition is the last few words.
