Two I cannot parse here:

23a Afternoon when Pip leaves in classic novel (4)
I have -M-A, so certainly looks like Emma, but why?

44a Be baffled, seeing no key on time switch (6)

I have -O-G-E, so could be toggle (for switch).

All help gratefully received.

Grahamr, the PM shouldn't have been at the start of my post - I was too busy looking at the dictionary as I typed.

It looks like either BOGGLE or TOGGLE, but not entirely clear whether B is replaced by T or vice versa.. I just prefer TOGGLE

Finished but unable at the moment to parse 53a. I have the answer as MILDLY which is clearly a contrast 'furiously' but beyond that cannot see how the clue works.
Hope you all had an enjoyable if rather strange Christmas. Now in Tier 4 here in Norfolk.

Hi CannieAnnie,

I haven't done this crossword but it could be "furiously" = WILDLY with the leading letter is "overturned" so W becomes M = MILDLY.

Cannyannie, it's always good to give the clue then those without a copy can help, comment.

53 A. When leader's overturned, furiously - not like this (6)

Wildly would have been 'furiously', turn the W, leader, first letter, upside down for M, so Mildly.
