Another thumbs up for the Chambers phone app. I've been using the Android version for years. It's much cheaper than the paper version, is regularly updated and is very user-friendly.

Thanks for the suggestions folks.
I tried out Onelook.com this morning and found it useful, and very user-friendly. One gripe is that it didn't give me 27 down "Head sounds like an ass to audience?" - even though I fed it three of the four letters, and the word is in Chambers.

I may look into the phone app later if I find I need to pay for it, being of a limited pension.

EvilTony, the Chambers dictionary app is very good but the thesaurus app less so. Online synonym generators are plentiful so you could save by ignoring the bundle offer and just getting the dictionary for starters.
Re Azed 2524, can anyone help with the parsing of 11a 'Polish, like one of my lovers, might one suppose?'
I have 'sand'. It could be wrong of course!

You might want to check out the lovers of George Sand, in particular a famous composer.

Doh! I had looked at her Wikipedia entry and the penny still didn't drop. I even knew about them beforehand. Double doh! Thanks Jack (:o)
