Thanks malone. One of my pet hates is the inclusion of obscure Americanisms (there was one this week, in fact). I'm also no fan of "subtraction" clues (where a letter is removed from one word to form all or part of another one), or those which simply say "boy" or "girl" to indicate that the answer includes a name. These clues are almost impossible to solve from first principles - I have to guess the answer first, then work backwards to try to figure out how it's constructed.

TheMadWoman, thanks. I too dislike the 'boy' or 'girl' clues, I always feel they're a little bit lazy, too convenient for the setter. I don't mind common Americanisms, but dislike obscure ones - obscure anythings in fact!

32 down

Too much is coverable without following fine English (12)

*N*U*F*R*B*E

Has to be INSUFFERABLE but how does it parse?

're 1 down. I thought a CABOOSE was the equivalent of our guards van on a train. Chambers agrees and I can find no ref to it as meaning jail. What have I missed?

Thanks Stevie but it is a different word and I can't find a link betwixt 'em. I think the setter got it wrong, but more likely I did!

Trevsmif, CALABOOSE was the obscure Americanism I referred to in my comment above.
