What is the consensus about changing the last letters of 17 and 40 across to achieve the final grid? My view is it is unnecessary given 1, 33, 42 and 43 across are not changed.

I'm puzzled, son1ofrover1. If we don't change those two, then we won't have revealed the true identity, surely?

I think I know what you've done Son1ofRover1, have you got 17a ending AR and 40a ending EE? They should end AE and ER respectively.

I had ae and er as the endings for 17 and 40 but was wondering whether they should be changed to ar and ee in the final grid. Given there is already an r in 17 and an e in 40, I think not, meaning 5 of the 16 words remain unchanged.

Son... yes, I can see your thinking now. I was happy to change as many words as possible - simply because they were there to be changed!

Why is 33ac not changed? Don't you have to change the initial P to an A? (I wasn't sure about the legitimacy of the resulting word though, unless it's a recognized alternative spelling... or a reference to the Twelve Days of Christmas!)
