I've grumbled about char/daily before on here. To me, it makes the setter sound like an old fuddy-duddy sitting in his ivory tower while his "lady who does" fusses around him.
But maybe I'm over-sensitive because I work as a cleaner.
There was an interesting discussion about "char" etc on the Pedants thread 2 or 3 weeks ago, after a clue in the Times. Grunger said that she had also been a cleaner. Worth looking at.
