Would "tige" have been more consistent?

I agree Chris, though I can’t be sure it was sent to me in its original form. Perhaps someone knows of the original Araucaria puzzle this came from?

A Times Jumbo from about 2005 today. This one I'm so close with...
Some fish are left compressed by others - they revive (8,5)
The answer is SMELLING SALTS, and I have SMELTS and LING for the two fish, but not sure where left compressed fits to have a full parsing

That was the first thought, but I remain unconvinced as it doesn't seem a very good clue. Plus there is a debate that says LING is the plural, so there is SAL to parse

Lings would be correct if referring to two or more species of Ling, so this could work I think.

Yes to that, but I still feel it's quite a poor clue! Moving on with another from a Times Jumbo of about 2005:
Saucepan seen briefly in dresser (7) is STEAMER but no real idea how!

SS is an abbreviation of steamer or steamship, and it’s seen shortly in dreSSer. Not a great clue, imho

That'll do for me thanks! I was up the blind alley of multi-drawer steamer trunks, believe it or not.
