Hi Lumen,

"valse" is French/Ravel for 'waltz' so around "i" gives the answer which, Chambers gives is one of the definitions of "grip".

My father had one of those leather bags which he called a grip. The closing mechanism was two half frame pieces at the top that snapped together, possible sprung in some way, and certainly gripping!
