Thank you for replying jack aubrey - that's pretty close to how I felt (although mine was a distinctly grudging admiration!).
In the great scheme of things it's just another crossword that's left me feeling a little bit peeved.

I spotted the features and had the right mechanics, but perhaps I’ve been using the wrong key. The last word in the instructions suggests a six letter word but that gave gibberish...or so I thought. But then I’m a techie who was scarred for life by a bully of a French teacher. More scribbling required!

paultje - I might have misunderstood your last (I no longer have the puzzle) but the last word indicates more than 6 letters ie the whole thing....
