I agree, orson.
Luckily, I kept tabs - as I usually do - by writing the correct letter in the clue (/T) and the corrected letter in the margin (F).

I agree. There has never been a mistake in a Gaston pre-amble, so I think this will be an editorial one. Gaston usually says "correct". So there are 2 accidental misprints (malone pointed out the other). Thats the problem with "misprint" puzzles. You never know which are deliberate.

Great puzzle as always from this setter.

Hi Malone,

You know I did 😀I always do - whether the preamble calls for highlighting or not! This time, though, I only highlighted the part of the question after "what is.....?" and not the answers, because they run in to each other and so wouldn't make nice patterns.

I couldn't parse 8a although I'm sure of my answer...

Nosy Gaston's followed, mostly in order to keep safe (9)

I can sort of see the French/Gaston's for "followed" (although it's mixed up) but wonder if that's anything to do with it.

I think 'Gaston's' is 'I've', brendan - it follows 'in order to keep safe' (7 letters - minus the last/ 'mostly') which usually starts with 'e' but has this alt sp.

I'm sure you're right, grunger - and the little errors didn't spoil my enjoyment of the puzzle in any way.

Brendan, glad you got some fun with your highlighters! I hadn't thought through the logistics of any colouring-in.

Drxx

I thought that the arrangement of the unchecked letters into 6 examples of the thematic groups was a very clever idea.

I was puzzled at first, but your posting partly in bold a few weeks ago led me to the idea.

Yes I couldnt understand the apparent random arrangement until the bold ones gave it to me

Found this one most enjoyable. Norfolk is now very crowded so I am not swimming too far away from the home sandbank and its nice to enjoy one after the traumas of the Listener.

Having completed I looked at this thread. Sorry to ask again drxx, but how is the grouping of the surplus letters linked to thematic groups? Am I missing something obvious?
