"Darling actor, with Blyton's dog, held nicer sort of sailors (3,9). The answer is obviously Tim McInnerny - Timmy the dog around anagram of "nicer" but "nn" for sailors?

Yes, but it's one of those where you can abstract an initial from a name and say that it stands for a word. RN is "Royal Navy", but, for instance, it's like saying B = "broadcasting" because that's what it is in BBC. I can't think of an example where N stands for "navy" by itself.

Chambers has ' N - navy', so I think it's fine.
