thanks, drxx - I didn't know that word, though I have a vague recollection of it occurring in an earlier genius - speaking of which, my form has an extra 4d from an earlier genius - have left it blank ...
I was confused in 1a because I was trying to use Basil Lord who was also in the Whitehall farces company throughout the 50's and 60's - but couldn't find a fit for bail!

Thanks, prospero, I'll try to remember that name - my knowledge of 'farce' is strictly limited to the other one (I'm trying to forget his name, but it's too deeply etched into my memory).

I don't think I have ever got the theme so quickly, but now i'm really struggling. One of the first I got was 27A ... but only if the last word is roll, not role! I have a eight-letter anagram plus n. What am I doing wrong?

role not role is right, Pendragon - it's one of the clues you have to correct a letter in to get the right definition

Pendragon, are you remembering '...definition … contains a misprint'?

that should of course have read roll not role ...

Having trouble completing this. It would really help me if I knew what type of clue 1d and 13/25 are. Theme, misprint or normal?

I have them as Normal and Theme.

I assume 5D goes into 4D's place. I have A_R_E_. Any hints?
