I've got the extra word "communist" from 11a going into 4d.

I've got 12a "losing" going into 5d.

I think 'losing' is required in the clue, brendan.
I went for S[oot]HES minus '(L)oot' = 'plunder' [without leader].

...but, yes - it's 11a for the other one (I scribbled over the number - it looks like 10 now!)

...so, (sorry, rad!) 10a goes into 12a... I think.

I've got clues with words circled and others with arrows where I think they should go, with a clue number next to each addition or subtraction for cross referencing purposes.

It's a bit of a mess;-)

23d. Seems to need a word to place 'setter' inside 'lacking in caution', but none of my suspected superfluous words fit. Any hints?

I've also got an asterisk next to that one. I think "bottles" from 27d would be the most suited but it seems to be needed in its own clue.
