Mmm - CUT and LET are both not quite right. LET would be "rent out" rather than "rent", whereas CUT seems more deliberate than a rent or tear.

Alwayspuzzled, ChrisE - It has to be Let Loose, the L(et) coming from the Colourless. (You wouldn't have known those crossed, but I still have my copy.)

Thanks, alwayspuzzled. Bradford's crossword dictionary gives 'rent' under 'let' and vice versa, so it must have been used before.
