Nearly finished in spite of the references to people and films I've not heard of. Help please. with my last one:

Irregular actor, contemporary of Marvin L, bringing book out (6)

Random, irregular? That'd be from Brando, actor, contemporary of Lee Marvin. I think the M would come from Brando M, using the same format as Marvin L.

Ah! Thank you malone. The L came from my assumption that 1D was making an obscure reference to Lt Phillips in The Navy Lark.
