Times 27684. 17 down. Support for idiots. Answer is ASSIST but how does it work?

A 'tee' is a support (T)

Since it is a 'down' clue, the T is supporting assis/ homophone for 'asses'

A bit rough around the edges . .

Is there a homophone indicator?

I think it's just that -ist would indicate 'someone/something favouring...' It's like monarchist and royalist - so someone who likes, favours, Asses, idiiots could be Assist.

...and Assist obviously equals 'support'.
