Oh dear, some weeks I do so well on this, but this is one of those other weeks.
I think I've got these two but am not sure.
10a Taking portside tack, gamble for ship (5)
Sloop? IE pools or gamble backwards, though that doesn't explain the 'taking portside tack' bit.
56a I regret snatching it back, a huge area of land (7)
Eurasia? I can see the I and Rue backwards and the final 'a' but that leaves an unexplained 'as' in the middle.

Hi Strangelybrown,

in 10a the "portside tack" means it's written right to left rather than left to right.

56a The "it" means 'sex appeal' shortened to SA

Thank you both. It = sex appeal = SA is one of those annoying things you either know or don't, and if you don't then no amount of thinking about it will get you there. I cannot think of any circumstances in which someone might use 'SA' to mean sex appeal.

....except in crosswords, where "IT" and "SA" are distressingly common, strangleybrown!

But 'SA' as an abbreviation for sex appeal? I'm just saying that the use of language in a crossword ought to have some resemblance to its use in the real world and no one ever says 'SA' when they mean sex appeal.
