Many thanks yet again syzygy & sunray. Nice puzzle, really like 32*. Perhaps, a "needless" word in the preamble alerted me to the theme sooner than had it not been there or different.

It looked impossible at first, but it was fun.
32 was my last. Cute clue.

That was a blast. Thanks! I too liked 32, and it's the title of one of my favorite poems, by H.D.

I've never heard of H.D. before, aristo. Only one of her poem's titles fit the space. (Is love's gift best?)

It begins: "All Greece hates the still eyes in the white face." Like so many of the Imagists she was a nutcase, but her poems are beautiful.

For "trains" in the clue, think of what they're called in Chicago.

aristo, I'm enjoying reading her poems, but the title of that poem is far too short to fit round the edge of the puzzle. Or have I misread the preamble?

I am not much of a fan of Rupert Brooke, but I admire his poem Menelaus. Related subject.

Um, to which clue does your train hint refer? I (now!) know what trand in Chicago are called. When I was there I only ever travelled door to door by company car (or taxi, sitting diagonally as instructed!!)

Please could I have a hint for 26?

Re my post @4: I was referring to clue 32 when I mentioned H.D., not the puzzle's theme. Sorry!

Clue 26: Boy's name (usually nickname) and club synonym.
