Ch = chief
Ill = hardly (I've checked Chambers, it works - 'with difficulty')
Axing, winding up, closing.

Chillaxing, resting.

Stuck on the explanation for 9d.

Where Council sat to go over ground (5,6)

We have Trent Bridge for “ground”, bridge = “go over” but Trent?

Tim...you're welcome - and I too had never heard of it. I stuck the answer in without thinking, and only looked it up now because you asked!

I would have finished sooner but I had LYON instead of LINZ, almost fits the clue L+ YON but made 15a a bit difficult to solve. Tough this week

Legend has it that the Council of Trent was where Palestrina persuaded the powers not to ban polyphonic music by having performed his Missa papae Marcelli However legend seems to be incorrect - although some attendees thought that polyphony disguised the words, there was never any attempt to ban it!
