Liked malcolm 5, paul 13, aristo 18 and FJ 28. Also liked spike 21 but don't see that P for peppers is a recognised abbreviation. However, voting for

spike2 # 17.

Having just re-read the entries I’d like to say that Mattrom at 23 would have been joint second for me had I understood the meaning of noddy!

Hi all and apologies for the late posting of the results.
I became quite ill yesterday evening and went to bed early - no, it isn't Kung Flu!
Still feeling rough this a.m. but well enough to compile the results.
Another enjoyable and varied batch of entries.
mattrom @ 32, malc @ 3 and kt17 @ 7 all get one vote each.
spike2 @ 17 received three votes, a worty runner-up.
However, with 6 votes, without having to apply Occam's Razor, is aristophanes' masterful

WAX WHERE IT'S HARD TO SHAVE (8).

Well done aristophanes - I, "falling fling to the host behind" the baton of responsibility for the next contest.

Your prize - a look back at the days of steam railways.

Thanks everyone and apologies again for the glitch.

Wonderful clue, aristo.

My elder son is so keen on steam trains he moved to Wales to be able to drive them. We have just returned from Switzerland to ride on two of the famous (electric) trains there. No, we didn't stay on to cross into Italy! But he did comment on the huge labour involved in firing these trains, when steam-powered, to climb that high, that fast.

Aristo - you may be interested to know I passed your clue on ( with a note to say I wasn't the author ! ) in the Facebook group ' Cryptic Crossword Society ', and it's garnered quite a few thumbs-ups !
