16d Adonis lowers bar (8) - BEEFCAKE

I get that Adonis = Beefcake, but why 'lowers bar'?

Hi Brendan,
Lowers = cattle = beef, and there is a 'bar cake', although that would seem to be an example.

I think I've got it Chris, do both words begin with an R? (I don't want to spoil it for others)

Excellent, thanks Chris - that is a really good clue.

I also like the "GEGS" clue people were talking about earlier and you are absolutely right about Henry Davenport struggling over it in Drop The Dead Donkey - he ended up chasing an unsuspecting courier, who accidentally let slip the answer, all round London.
