I think dogw**d is a shrub as opposed to a tree, but I admit to having been in two minds for quite a while.

Drxx, Peter, the discussion here made me take a look in Chambers. The C.... tree/shrub isn't in my copy.

peter284 - Both C... and S... are 's****s and t***s' according to wiki.

The c... genus hasn't got its own entry in Chambers, malone but D**w*** is there under the entry for D** and the def is 'a small t*** with white flowers', so I think we're probably right (and I also agree with you on your assessment of Doc's puzzles).

I'm being a bit silly with the dots and stars - but I thought I'd carry on as I started.

Thanks again, drxx. I expect the 'correct' answer will simply be the one of Doc's choosing!

Oops just realised my print out was a bit fuzzy and I thought 40a was 4 letters! Sorry for confusion.

I thought I had this all but complete (except 17Dn), until l read the comments above.

For 17 (Ladies' hat-maker cut amount of advertising space available (7) I have N?L?INE, with my 16Ac being ALNUS. I'd appreciate some help with this one.

My arboreal meanderings appear to differ somewhat from thoseof other solvers. My current 2nd letter for 36Dn is a U, as I thought TULIP might fit the bill. I'm now thinking the category must be limited to LATIN taxonomy, making 40 a slightly amusing homophone. This still wouldn't solve the dilemma at 2Dn, which I share with some other dissatisfied customers. Glad to see my favourite setter given a name-check.

After a rethink, now going for the service at 2, and the lime at 36. Still stuck on the milliner, though.
