But aren't 1 and the middle cell and 14 and 25 the same colour?

I found some conflicting information on the net - I even read somewhere that one of the books was misprinted! Finally, I put my search in as - 'what is the colour of ?? X' and scanned results for each individual (a bit hit & miss but I wasn't allowed into the fan forums!).

novice/(teenieleek) - It might be helpful to mention that the four you've indicated are quite distinct in my colour range (although 14+[centre] and [centre]+1 are tonally quite close).
In order of the rainbow (GBIVROY) I have the following order -

25 14 [centre] 1

I have 1 and centre as pink

14 and 25 as blue?

Because the instruction (extra letters in down clues) is so specific, I shied away from depictions or multiple colours, and this convinced me that the colours would be distinct - that's the kind of miscalculation I often make, so you could well be right about identical colours.
And as I don't submit the solutions I'm probably more easily satisfied!
