Mattrom - thanks, I will plod on...

I have the name, title etc, so fingers crossed!!

As usual I struggle with Phi's offerings. I have managed to fill the grid apart from 5d (I assume it is PLAT) and still cannot parse 30d ( I have ETAS). I have the three words and the name of its creator. Not sure on the highlighting though. Any help would be gratefully received.

You are nearly there with 5dn. The kitchen utensil is a PAN, with an added L to give PLAN. The wordplay leads to a reversal of NAP, a tip given to someone who bets on horses, etc.

You have the correct entry for 30dn. The T is the added letter here. EAS are a dialect word for water channels (singular is EA), and the wordplay leads to EAS(E).

Thanks Wintonian for your help. I can see which cells to highlight now I have my ' chess' hat on.

Re 5dn and 30dn, does that mean that there is nothing in each clue to indicate that the extra letters are L and T, and that they arrive out of thin air, i.e. from the crossing answers? If so, I've wasted a fair bit of time.

There are eight entries in the grid to which an extra letter must be added. In all cases, the extra letter is given by a crossing entry. I don’t think that there is anything special about the letters that are added, other than the requirement that the final grid entries are all real words.

All done except for 13 across. I am fairly certain that the unchecked letter must be A, but I cannot parse the clue. Any hints would be appreciated.

I think the unchecked letter is U....C missing from 1st word...defn at the end of the clue

Thanks Wintonian, I forgot that the alterations can be to the answer as well as to the clue, so I was looking for an extra letter as in e.g. 24dn. Onwards we go,,,
