Definitely a 'quaint' way of referring to sex but I'm sure it's right.

Chambers thesaurus says vacancy=opening=post. This option is may be better, i think.

I agree that it's the better option and I did change my answer to that, but my point is is that one can't really say that one answer is correct and the other is wrong, more that one is 'more correct' than the other.

Agreed re 3dn, although your first thought hadn’t occurred to me until you mentioned it. It works though, and I’ll be interested to see what Paul’s solution is. Black mark for him anyway.

Re 1ac: I think it parses as (what make up) a dog’s coat on the outside, with ‘one’ following its first letter, then a colloquial word (usually a verb) for an essential surrounding the opening of ‘position’.

That's excellent Rogissimo, many thanks.

PS. 6d is another where I have the answer but, in this case, not only can't I figure out the parsing but I can't see a definition either! The fourth word would fit but that can't be it - any thoughts?

I’m also not able to parse 1a correctly. I interpreted it this way. Setter’s coast= hairs, Setter’s opening position = I must, and essential position =p. Doesn’t fit well though.

mathi - see above. ‘I must’ is not as you’ve parsed it, I think.
