Simond9x - can't see that anyone else has replied. You should have 'first notes' as the definition. If you look up the definition of the first two letters of the answer it's an alternative to doh, the first note.

Stephen - It depends how much assistance required to start and appreciate people can be sensitive about sharing email - but if any help can for example give indication of where to locate one of the 4x4 blocks
which tells you all answers with a letter in that block (and it's symmetrical partner) are type 1 clues (wordplay + wrong definition) and the remainder are normal. Still leaves all to be solved. The offer is there only if you want to use it - nick.carter3@talktalk.net

Thanks smelly, it's one of those kick myself moments. I'd looked up the first 2 letters knowing the definition..... nothing. Unfortunately I'd written in the wrong first letter (taking the one adjacent to what it should have been). Doh! All done now, thanks.

Finished the crossword after much difficulty, but I still don’t see why the word ”prime” is used in 9d. Any suggestions would be very welcome

Casanova @54, that was a mystery to me as well, but EXPO comes from letters 2, 3, 5, and 7 of textphone. Prime numbers, geddit.... very devious

Granama, re your post no. 50: I too download the Azed from the Guardian website, but I am not sure whether these are admissible for a potential prize, or whether one has to buy the paper and cut out the appropriate part. Do you know the answer to this?

0pt0, I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that, I'd always assumed so but I never submit them so had never really thought about it properly. It doesn't appear to be ruled out from what I remember of the text on the web site.
