Well, that was a real struggle, with lots of trips up errant garden paths - still, got there in the end.

I particularly liked the connection between 12a, 19a and 7d - very clever.

Can’t get the clue related to a horse’s name in 14d, with t?e ?e?r ?l?. Guess it has to do with tear. I guess the decorative paste applied on foot in 16a is not exactly a sole protector.

Hi Mathi, in regards 14d, you need to check which horses are allowed to run in the race mentioned.

16d is a type of boot and is the usual abbr. of "house" + a 4 lettter word for a "guarantee2 (think 'court') around N(umber).

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thanks Brendan. Got all now. My 16a was wrong earlier. Corrected it now.

I just cannot get my last one which seems so getable:

4D Fellow keeping the queen up after midnight? That seems highly unlikely! 5/2. I have ?R?A?/O?
Help!

University fellow, usual abbreviation for queen and 2 letters meaning after midnight.

I'm pretty sure that I have the answer to 7d ("time") but struggling to parse. Any hints please?

Hi Scorpiojo - still cannot see 4D. Is the whole answer a university fellow?
