So it is malone. I didn’t think to look along the list. That just leaves one query: what is the omitted letter in 36? I don’t understand the wordplay at all. Now to tackle the origami. Are the two letter entries a guide to cut at an angle? I’m not sure if I will have time for this as I am cooking for 14 this Christmas, and there is so much to do.

XIJ, in 36, the first three letters and last letter of the entry = engaged in Congress, sex. The entry itself is an unusual (for me!) meaning of 'cant'.

PS I forgot to say, I didn't do the cutting stage - I wouldn't trust myself!

XIj, yes the divided cells are cut on the diagonal dividing line.

Thanks smithsax, I had many attempts to work it out, but that wasn't one of them.

I think I've finished the grid correctly but I can't seem to do the cutting and pasting. Could anyone verify that my double entries are correct - from top to bottom, L-R?
U/S; A/R; C\T; A\T E\M; U\D; E/N; A/N; T/E

If so, is there something I could be doing wrong with the cutting? There are only two ways I can see of doing it if you cut along the diagonals

Ukridge, that's what I had. If you google the first hint from the across clues the cutting follows. The 7 shapes are always the same. Find the centre, one diagonal half will split in two. There is one cut that I missed at first below 33a but the exta letter in 36a flags where it should be.

Thanks Granama1. I found the shapes online. I'm still having a problem though. We are only matching identical letters that were OMITTED, aren't we?

Ha. I think I have it. I thought that square looked like a pot! Thank you.
