Excuse
a poor example; "it was an apology for a meal"; "a poor excuse for an automobile"

18a is anagram: lunatic male i
22A poor as in a lame one
14d is secret meant to be an anagram indicator ? Doesn't work for me

Thanks both. I don't think an excuse is necessarily "poor", and a "knot" isn't the definition for 18a - the answer needs "per hour" to be a "knot".

I just checked and found two references for knot in Merriam Webster.
1 is a NM per hour
2 is a NM - not used technically

Thanks, jazzy - I would say that "2" was incorrect.

Again, I wish that dictionaries would say "incorrect" when the usage is wrong - epicentre, for instance!

As ever, stuck on a very small one ! 21 d "Stick close to mate after prison" (4) I have C ? N ?. I suppose `can` is prison and `cane` is ` stick`. But where does `mate` come into it ? Mags.
