I have ADE? and can't see it. As usual any help welcome.

It's ADES (not a very good clue!).

Thomas ADES (composer), 'shades' = 'the darkness of the underworld' or 'Hades' (see Chambers), ADES is Milton's spelling of 'Hades'.

I haven't parsed 17d fully.

I am not sure how the first three letters are derived from gay deceiver.

The crossers helped me. A bit confusing?
