A "rod" could be an angler, in the same way that a "gun" could refer to a grouse-shooter. The other O could come from "Over" (cricket), with "hooks" a weird inclusion indicator?

Angler = ROD

O = Over

Answer = ROOD (Definition 40 Perches)
