With some of your help and some clearer thinking on my part -- double definition!-- it's finally fallen into place. Thank you for the stimulating clues.

I wasn't able to start this afternoon as I've been at Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival. I found it difficult to concentrate between events. But I got home at 7.00pm and have motored through most of those I hadn't got, but I have problems with the bottom right hand corner. Some hints for 26,29, 20d, 20ac and 21 across would be helpful. I don't understand the hints given for 28ac. If I understand them right I get an answer that is 9 letters long, not the 7 needed.

20d First 2 letters - think "chemistry" + another 'way of spreading the "word"

I resorted to the dictionary for the alternative word and found it for 28ac, but have failed to understand your hints for the others. I never thought the landlord was a pub landlord. I have an idea for the first two words of 26,19, but can't find the second word. I have T? ??? ?E???R. Are my crossers right?

For 20d I have ?I???S and I've just got 21ac. So nearly there. But bed beckons after a busy day by the seaside.
