As with shay/chay last month, 27 across has two equally valid answers, depending on which of the two ways you interpret "services". The dumbing-down is surely complete when random chance is introduced into what is supposed to be an intellectual pursuit. I'd stop taking this rag if I hadn't paid for a life-time subscription! (Actually, I find the occasional financial or pension item useful, but the whole thing's a sorry vestige of what it was before Emma Soames.)

What was the clue? I don't subscribe so I haven't seen the original, but I'd be interested to see what the problem is.

"Accommodation for those in the services" but you really need to have one or both of the checked letters if it's not going to take a life-time to suss.

I wondered if the other option was going to be Mess, for the services (officers' mess) - leading to the two possibilities.

Thanks, Cerasus. I originally felt 'mess' wasn't quite 'accommodation', as I think of the officers' mess as just a dining-room really... but it's maybe as valid as a 'pew' being 'accommodation'?
