mattrom: Re your clue @12, I see SOD R ER backwards. Is the missing E from a specific king (like Edward) as with the queen?

rosalind: Could you help me with the parse?

Christ in Glory is the huge and magnificant tapestry which hangs behind the altar in the new Coventry Cathedral, thus acting as a reredos. I read that the latter can be a painting or hanging and does not have to be wood or stone. Backs in sense of a backdrop to the exercise (in the sense of doing) of rites (homophone). I put the question mark in as Christ in Glory is a def by example, though maybe it's too far away.

Thanks, rosalind. I did have the definition (and am familiar with the design of said cathedral- Basil Spence, right?), just wasn't getting the rites homophone.

Yes, the Cathedral was designed by Sir Basil Spence, the tapestry by Graham Sutherland (and the windows by John Piper are magnificant). I now think I should have written my clue the other way round!

Aristo, yes, King Edward (in Chambers). Revisiting it, I'm now not sure if it works to use capitalised abbreviations in a lower case way, although that seems to be quite common in crosswords.
