I think Rhea works better - that way you drop the T, temperature, from 'earth' (desolate = anagram it).

Surprisingly for me I have managed to solve all the clues but the perimeter is proving elusive. Could somebody please point me in the right direction by telling me where the first of the five starts (top left corner?) and how long it is.

Two letters in the middle are E and I.
Does volcano mean IE (climbing)

Group = First 4 letters.
The 2 for volcano,
Then 5 for cried with last letter missing.
