I'm stuck in the bottom half. A hint for this one might get me restarted:

What's up with newspaper in fictitious case, its views distorted (4,2,7)

???L ?F ?????R?

One of many awful clues. It contains a name of an actual newspaper

The last three words of the clue are the definition; the solution includes the name of a British newspaper.

Thank you both. I'll see where that goes. (And thank you chrise for confirming my opinion of the clueing.)

Yes, David W. 9a is the most wincingly groan-inducing "homophone" I've ever seen!

Last one!

What cinema promotes is of some importance (7)

A?A?R?M

(I'm not sure about the 'M')

Another poor one. Look at "cinema promotes" and "some importance"

Some parsing issues* for me but the 9 ac homophone did make me cringe as well as laugh, Chrise, and I thought 24 across was quite clever and 17 down amused me a bitty too.

*Quid, perhaps, charged originally to cut meat sandwiches (7)

I have something you puff but don't know why quid = OB?

Quid is the definition. You might have the meat with eggs!

A couple I haven't parsed (and not convinced I've got right):

5d Female bird impressed by male's train, I see? (6)
I have a female bird as the answer, but don't see how it works.

27a Something written about in poem, new spins on certain verb forms (3-6)
I have the only sensible answer that fits the crossers, but, unless it's a verb form, I've no idea what's going on!
