I agree, Malone!
However, a sharper is a cheat or swindler, and rook means to cheat or swindle, too.
So....."rookery"....reasonable?

Thanks, Rusty and Trent. It was the 'sharpers' I didn't really like - I know what it means but I don't think it's been used for around 50 years! It's in Chambers, so definitely legitimate.
